In 1828, the world of chocolate changed. In Amsterdam, Casparus Van Houten worked with the newest technology of the time and thus invented the hydraulic cocoa press. He separated cocoa liquor from cocoa butter for the first time, revolutionizing cocoa. From that moment, the manufacture of cocoa powder became relatively cheap.

THE SEARCH FOR THE PERFECT PORTION

Casparus' son, Coenraad Van Houten, took over and continued to further refine the cocoa powder. After years of learning from his father, he invented the Dutching process, now famous throughout the world. By alkalizing cocoa, it lost its bitter taste and became the sweet, slightly colored substance we all know and love today.

The discovery even paved the way for the invention of the chocolate bar. It also made volume production possible and made chocolate as a whole affordable.
